A car crashed into a hospital in Austin, Texas on Tuesday, leaving one person dead and at least five others injured, authorities said.
A vehicle crashed into the emergency room at St. David's North Austin Medical Center shortly after 5:30 p.m. local time, Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman Capt. Krista Stedman said in a news conference Tuesday night. said.
The driver of the car was extricated from the vehicle and given CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Austin Fire Department Chief Thayer Smith said.
Two children and one adult were taken to Dell Children's Medical Center, Austin-Travis County EMS Director Robert Lucritz said. One child was in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, while an adult and a second child suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Lucritz said.
A second adult was taken to St. David's Round Rock Medical Center with potentially life-threatening injuries, Lakritz said.
Eight other people who were in the emergency room but were not injured in the accident are being taken to other area hospitals so the emergency room can “regroup,” Chief Medical Officer Dr. Peter DeYoung said Tuesday. He said this at a press conference.
“This incident does not appear to be an intentional act,” a Facebook post from the Austin Police Department said.
Officials said officers from the Motor Vehicle Homicide Unit were on the scene investigating the cause of the accident.
DeYoung said the building appeared to be in good condition and hospital operations were not interrupted. The ER was rerouting ambulances but still accepting walk-in patients.
