Malay – Murray City Council is calling on State Education Commissioner Natalie Klein to resign after further backlash.
The Murray City Council unanimously voted Tuesday to pass a resolution condemning Klein's online conduct toward Murray-area student-athletes, while also calling for Klein's resignation and an investigation into the incident, passed by the Granite School District Board of Education. “This is not about restricting free speech. This is about standing up to bullying,” said City Councilman Paul Pickett Acevedo. “Bullying should never be tolerated, but it is especially egregious when it is committed by an adult in a responsible position against a minor.”
Klein is accused of cyberbullying student-athletes, showing them team photos and falsely implying they were transgender. As a result, the student was targeted and harassed online.
“We cannot remain silent. We must stand up and protect the rights of victims,” Acevedo said.
Klein has since deleted the post and apologized for the negative attention it attracted. Since then, several cities and lawmakers have called for her resignation.
“This is a standard that we as elected officials should hold ourselves to, a high level of accountability,” said City Councilman Adam Hock.
On Monday, the city of Midvale passed a resolution calling for Klein's immediate resignation. Utah Senate President J. Stuart Adams, R-Layton, told reporters Monday that he is considering accountability options, including giving the State Board of Education impeachment powers.
