A former Sewanee University basketball coach violated NCAA rules by betting more than $93,000 on college and professional sports while serving as an assistant for the men's team and head coach for the women's team, the association said Tuesday. announced that it had won.
The Division III school, also known as University of the South, and the NCAA enforcement staff agreed that for 26 months, the coach willfully violated rules prohibiting betting on sports involving athletic department personnel.
The coach, who was not named in the NCAA report, placed 407 bets totaling $28,000 on college sports, including 20 bets on women's college basketball games. were also included, the report said. Those games did not include his own team.
In the most high-profile recent case involving violations of NCAA gambling rules, former University of Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon was arrested earlier this month for providing information about his team to gamblers who used it to place illegal bets. He received a 15-year performance order.
The Tennessee Sports Wagering Advisory Board notified Sewanee of the betting activity by the coach in March 2023.
Brody Curry resigned as Sewanee University's women's coach on July 14, the university announced. He previously served as an assistant coach for the men's team from 2020 to 2022.
The Sewanee coach, who was not identified, was given a show-cause order that if he is hired by another NCAA institution over the next two years, he will be suspended for five games at the start of his first season. Additionally, if a school hires a coach during the show cause period, the school must provide the coach with individual rules training each month.
The NCAA Committee on Violations also sentenced Sewanee to one year of probation and fined the school $1,500.
The COI reviewed this case through a cooperative summary disposition process. Sewanee, the head coach and enforcement staff agreed with the key facts and violations in the summary disposition report. Because the school and coach accepted the penalty, neither can appeal.
