Sandcreek Middle School sixth graders united with 3,000 students from across the Capital Region to participate in the University at Albany Women's Basketball Education Day.
A highlight of the event was a pregame speech by Sand Creek teacher and University at Albany athlete and alumnus Kelly Berkevich. Barkevich shared her personal trajectory and highlighted the tremendous influence of education on her success both athletically and personally in her softball career. Her words touched the hearts of the audience and increased their motivation for tomorrow.
“It was a really great day for our entire team of Year 6 students and staff,” Ms Barkevich said. “Speaking for myself, it was very special because I was able to bring my students and colleagues to my alma mater. It played a huge role in shaping me into the person I am today. Prioritizing education Not only did this help me reach my position as a teacher and coach, but it also played an important role in my success as a student-athlete. I'm so excited to give them that experience and start to understand the dedication, dedication and perseverance it takes to reach that level both academically and athletically.”
Sand Creek faculty and staff not only watched the game, but also participated in a lively game of musical chairs. In addition, selected Sand Creek students were invited to show off their athleticism on the court, participating in a relay race demonstrating teamwork and sportsmanship.
“Education Commitment Day provided a unique opportunity for our students to celebrate the value of education while having fun and building friendships with other students from across the Capital Region,” said Sand Creek Middle School Vice Principal James Vardaro. Ta. “We are grateful to have been able to participate in such a meaningful event and for the opportunity for students to hear from Mr. Barkevich about the important role that education plays in sports and beyond. .”
