While the celebration continued in the locker room, Patrick Mahomes was still wearing his dirty jersey, stained with grass and sweat. He was barely within reach of winning his third Super Bowl and second consecutive title before he decided to do something he had never done before in the Super Bowl era.
“We're going to celebrate tonight. We're going to celebrate with a parade,” Mahomes said after the game. “So we're going to do whatever we can to come back to this game next year and try to get a three-peat. That's what's going on in the NFL. When you win a championship, there's a parade and you get a ring. And I'm not a champion anymore. I have to come back with the same mindset.
“I learned from people like [Tom] Brady is the best of all time and at the top of his level. That's my way of thinking. I'm going to celebrate with my guys that we've achieved this, but we're going to try to get back to this game next year. ”
Mahomes went 8-for-8 for 42 yards in overtime and scored a touchdown on the final drive, making the Chiefs the first team to repeat the game since Brady's Patriots in 2003-04. Mahomes also gained 27 yards and two first downs on two carries, including a fourth-down run.
He gained 69 of the team's 75 yards on the drive.
“I think the biggest thing for me is the way we played,” Mahomes said of winning back-to-back titles. “During the mid-season battle, we kept on believing, “We'll keep believing.'' It's really special. We're going to try to make this game as easy as possible by not closing the gap by 10 points, but… I was proud of the way our players fought.”
Brady has won seven championships. Mahomes has won MVP in three games and has won MVP in all three of those games.
Even if he's not being talked about as the greatest player of all time yet, Mahomes could be this time next year if he can accomplish what not even Brady has accomplished.
