Unless something unexpected happens, the Kansas City Chiefs do not plan to have wide receiver Kadarius Toney active in Sunday's Super Bowl, sources tell CBS Sports.
Toney will be a healthy scratch for the Chiefs in Super Bowl V, a year after his biggest play in Super Bowl XV.
The struggling wide receiver has not played in a Chiefs game since Week 15 against the Patriots. Toney has been dealing with injuries to his hip and ankle, and missed the game against the Ravens two weeks ago for personal reasons due to the birth of his child.
Toney has just 27 catches for 169 yards and one touchdown this season. He has dropped over 15 percent of his targets this season, the most of any qualifying receiver.
Super Bowl LVIII will air on CBS and Nickelodeon and can be streamed below. paramount+; Here's how to watch it:
In Week 1 against the Lions, Toney let a Mahomes pass fly out of his hands, but ended up intercepting it and returning it for a touchdown. The Chiefs lost to Detroit 21-20.
In Week 14, Toney was called offside on a play that would have decided the game, involving a lateral shot by Travis Kelce. The Chiefs lost to Buffalo 20-17.
Then the following week against the Patriots, Toney dropped a simple pass-and-catch from Mahomes that led to an interception. After that play, Mahomes was visibly shaken on the sideline. Toney played four more plays after that interception and hasn't played since.
Toney took to Instagram Live before the AFC Championship Game and went on a bizarre rant, which he later said he regrets.
Kansas City sources said Toney is not a bad person, but there are clearly trust issues in the building.
Toney returned a fourth-quarter punt 65 yards to Philadelphia's own 5-yard line in last year's Super Bowl. This is the longest punt return in Super Bowl history. Three plays later, the Chiefs scored the game-clinching touchdown.
The Giants selected Toney with the 20th overall pick in the 2021 draft and traded him to the Chiefs a year later. He has one year left on his contract and may not be able to return to the Chiefs next season.
