Buoyed by its partnership with Microsoft, OpenAI is reportedly preparing to launch its own AI-driven search product, which could soon threaten Google's long-held dominance in the search engine field.
OpenAI plans to unveil an AI-powered search tool on Monday, according to two sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters. The product launch is timed to coincide with Google's annual I/O conference, which starts on Tuesday and will feature several AI-related announcements.
Google remains a major player in search, but it is also adapting to incorporate AI more deeply into its features: It began testing AI-powered search summaries in the U.S. more than a year ago, and last month expanded the test to selected signed-in users in the U.K.
OpenAI's potential entry into the search engine market adds a new layer of competition not only to Google but also to other companies like Perplexity, which this week announced a partnership with SoundHound to power voice assistants in IoT devices with AI-powered search capabilities.
OpenAI, which is heavily backed by Microsoft, appears to be trying to carve out a niche by combining AI and search engine technology: Microsoft integrated OpenAI's AI capabilities into its Bing search engine and Edge browser in February 2023, making these advanced features available to paying subscribers, as well as integrating them into the Microsoft Office suite.
OpenAI's upcoming search product is expected to expand on its existing flagship tool, ChatGPT. As reported by Bloomberg, the new feature will allow users to ask ChatGPT questions and receive responses that pull information from the web with appropriate citations. This could include references to Wikipedia and various blogs, and may also provide explanatory images and charts related to the query.
If OpenAI successfully launches this new search product, it could mark a major shift in the way internet searches are conducted, moving away from the traditional search model towards more integrated, AI-driven responses that will significantly improve the user experience.
