The size of China's cross-border e-commerce has expanded more than tenfold over the past five years, the People's Daily reported on Tuesday, citing a press conference by Commerce Ministry spokesman He Yadong.
According to the ministry, cross-border e-commerce trade volume in the first quarter of 2024 was 577.6 billion yuan ($79.76 billion), up 9.6% from the same period last year, of which exports amounted to 448 billion yuan, up 14% from the same period last year.
According to preliminary statistics, there are more than 120,000 cross-border e-commerce enterprises in the country, at least 1,000 cross-border e-commerce industrial parks, and more than 2,500 overseas warehouses with a total area of more than 30 million square meters, of which more than 1,800 overseas warehouses specializing in cross-border e-commerce have a total area of more than 22 million square meters.
Cross-border e-commerce is an effective driving force for the development of China's foreign trade and an important trend in the growth of international trade. New foreign trade infrastructure such as cross-border e-commerce and overseas warehousing is developing rapidly, with great growth potential and strong traction effect.
The ministry said it will take advantage of China's 165 comprehensive cross-border e-commerce pilot zones to combine local industrial resources and location advantages to promote industrial development, and encourage more enterprises in industrial zones to use cross-border e-commerce to participate in international trade.
