SINGAPORE / SHANGHAI, China – Media OutReach Newswire – 24 May 2024 – DHL, the official founding partner and logistics partner of Formula E, will deliver Formula E to Shanghai as the city hosts the race for the first time. The event is set to take place this weekend, 25th and 26th May. Formula E made its debut in Beijing, China in 2014 and is now backed by DHL's 40 years of global motorsport expertise to advocate for a wider sustainability agenda.
Formula E has also joined DHL Global Forwarding's GoGreen Plus service – the latest in a decade-long series of initiatives throughout the championship – to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). For the Shanghai race, three planes will use SAF to transport 257 tonnes of cargo over 6,000 miles from the Berlin race to the Shanghai race, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% compared to traditional kerosene jet fuel.
As Formula E's logistics partner, DHL is leveraging its extensive global network and expertise to deliver time-sensitive race components to millions of fans around the world. Using its intermodal solutions, DHL is transporting around 380 tonnes of cargo by air, sea and road, including race cars, batteries, charging units, media and broadcast equipment. Over the past three seasons, there has been a strong focus on the use of biofuels in road and sea transport, resulting in a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
“Our partnership with Formula E represents a shared commitment to sustainability and innovation. By leveraging our logistics expertise and global network, we are proud to support Formula E in delivering exciting racing while reducing our environmental impact. Together we will drive positive change and inspire a greener future,” said Manuela Gianni, Head of Motorsport Italy, DHL Global Forwarding.
China as a major driver of sustainability
As a global leader in sustainability efforts, China has ambitious goals to tackle climate change and promote electric vehicles. The Chinese government has implemented various policies to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, including extending tax exemptions for new energy vehicles until 2027. As a result, the economic powerhouse has also emerged as a major supplier of electric vehicles (EVs). By hosting a Formula E race this year, China is showcasing its leadership in electric vehicle innovation and its efforts to promote the adoption of clean transportation solutions.
DHL at the forefront of sustainable logistics
A pioneer in sustainable logistics, DHL has invested heavily in alternative fuel vehicles, energy-efficient buildings and renewable energy sources to reduce its carbon footprint. DHL Group was the first logistics company to set a measurable carbon efficiency target and reduce its carbon footprint from 33 million tonnes in 2020 to less than 29 million tonnes by 2030. As part of this sustainability roadmap, DHL also aims to electrify 60% of its last-mile delivery fleet.
DHL Global Forwarding has implemented various initiatives across China to reduce its environmental impact. The company has a fleet of over 250 electric and hydrogen vehicles in China that drive more than 320,000 miles each month.
In China, DHL Express will achieve 26% electrification of its fleet by 2023 and currently has over 50,000 GoGreen Plus customers. It also launched hydrogen-powered trucks with a local partner for long-distance transport in Shanghai, making China the first among the 220 countries and regions in the DHL Express network.
“Formula E is a pioneer in electric street racing and Shanghai is the perfect place to showcase China's electric mobility solutions. Our long-standing partnership with Formula E extends beyond logistical support, as we also provide our expertise on customs regulations and procedures to ensure timely clearance of Formula E's many equipment and infrastructure. We are also proud to extend our partnership through GoGreen Plus to bring the race to Shanghai in a more sustainable way,” said Piak-Hui Tang, Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing Asia Pacific, DHL Global Forwarding.
“DHL's partnership with Formula E not only invigorates the racing world as we move towards a greener future, but also further strengthens our relentless commitment to green logistics solutions in China. We have been continuously investing in green logistics solutions across various aspects of our business, from electric vehicles to climate-neutral buildings. We will continue to find the right solutions and contribute to China's sustainability goals,” said Rick Zhang, senior vice president, China Commercial, DHL Express.
DHL has been an integral part of Formula E since its inception, providing end-to-end logistics solutions to ensure each race runs smoothly. To date, DHL has helped run more than 120 Formula E races around the world. Both organizations recognize the importance of reducing carbon emissions and encouraging the adoption of clean energy technologies, and share the common goal of accelerating the transition to a sustainable future. By joining forces, DHL and Formula E are driving innovation and raising awareness of the potential of electric vehicles.
