The Missouri Legislature submitted an education bill to the governor earlier this session. On May 7, Governor Mike Parson signed Senate Bill 727 and House Bill 2287.
2nd District State Representative Mazzie Christensen of Bethany reported on May 6 that Senate Bill 727 consists of 160 pages. He noted that the bill includes many elements, including a section dedicated to the Missouri Scholars Program.
One of the key elements of the bill was a proposal to increase teacher pay. Christensen believed he needed a raise. However, she expressed concern about some issues not addressed in the bill, particularly the potential impact if the teacher salary subsidy remains unfunded.
The bill also included media literacy initiatives, including distributing books to fifth and eighth graders. The homeschooling section has sparked a great deal of discussion among stakeholders as there are several unresolved issues.
Mr. Christensen chose not to support the bill. While appreciating certain aspects, she stressed the importance of not drafting legislation that burdens future legislators.
