The University of West Georgia and the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) recently launched Georgia STEPPS, a groundbreaking program designed to empower correctional professionals and staff through education and professional development. announced the launch of the Training and Education Partnership.
Scheduled to launch in fall 2024, Georgia STEPPS represents a collaborative effort between UWG and GDC to provide comprehensive educational opportunities tailored specifically to the needs of correctional officers.
Spearheading this effort is Dr. Dave Ayers, a former corrections officer turned assistant professor who brings first-hand experience and deep understanding of the challenges faced by people working in the correctional system.
“Georgia STEPPS is more than just a program. It is a testament to our commitment to the academic and professional growth of correctional officers,” Ayers said. “As someone who has been in my position, I understand the importance of providing opportunities for advancement and personal growth in this field.”
Through Georgia STEPPS, GDC officers and staff will have access to a variety of educational programs, including a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies, a NEXUS degree program, and a master's degree in public administration. Additionally, Georgia STEPPS offers Tier I and Tier II teaching certification programs in addition to online teacher certification programs in response to the evolving needs of correctional personnel.
