Today, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) Director Tim Bowling announced that the department is seeking proposals for food safety education and training under the Food Safety Education Fund Grant Program. Up to $365,000 is available as part of this grant cycle, which runs from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025.
Grants from the Food Safety Education Fund are competitive and will provide food safety training and education to consumers, food service establishment employees, and state and local officials enforcing the Michigan Food Act of 2000. The purpose is Those eligible to receive the grant include the state of Michigan. Government and non-profit organizations and associations. Producers, processors, marketers, and growers are not eligible for this grant. Proposals with subsidiary grant recipients will also be considered. Proposals should not include funding for necessary day-to-day training such as HACCP or manager certifications such as ServSafe.
The Food Safety Education Fund was established under the Michigan Food Act of 2000, as amended. 4117 and is funded through a $3.00 to $5.00 assessment from each Michigan food facility license.
Proposals will be scored and selected based on the following criteria:
- Goals/objectives to improve food safety
- Statewide needs and audiences
- measurable outcomes
- Partnerships with other organizations
- matching funds
- Opportunity to build on previously funded projects

The advisory committee will meet in July and August 2024 to review, score, and rank the proposals and make a funding recommendation to MDARD. Grants will be announced in September 2024 for projects running from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025. Multi-year proposals will be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to funding in future years.
