About a quarter of Americans, including therapists, experience a mental health illness.
“The work we do is pretty demanding,” said Brooke Clever, lead health navigator at Transitions Mental Health Association.
Clever works with patients to help develop recovery goals and strategies.
“I truly believe in recovery. I have experienced recovery myself, and I am in recovery while managing my own anxiety and depression,” Clever said.
Clever says it helps to be able to empathize with clients because of similar experiences she's had.
“We can speak the same language, talk about my journey, and break down the stigma surrounding mental health,” Kleber said.
Last year, more than 5,300 clients and their families received services from Transitions Mental Health Institute of San Luis Obispo.
“Many people have asked me why we spend an entire month on mental health awareness, and my answer is that they don't want us to,” said Michael Kaplan, director of community engagement at Transitions Mental Health Association. I can't spend a whole year on it.” He said.
There are many ways to get support, including wellness centers and hotlines.
Jill Bolster-White, executive director of the Transitional Mental Health Association, said the project is funded by the county's Department of Behavioral Health for people who are looking to live more stable lives without mental health symptoms. “We provide intensive services.”
“It takes a village and a community to support people along the way, and it can feel very isolating when you have mental illness and challenges, but you don't have to do it alone,” Kleber said.
