There's always a lot of buzz during Canelo fight week, and this one was no exception.
He had a surprising run-in with former promoter Oscar De La Hoya, who represents his opponent Jaime Munguia.
It got really bad. Canelo used all kinds of offensive language, starting out in Spanish before switching to English. Perhaps he felt the translator had toned it down.
De La Hoya said he “built” Canelo and asked for respect. In response, the fighter claimed that he invested because De La Hoya had his name and that he never lost a penny on that investment.
The hatred seemed real and intense.
Away from politics, Canelo has a serious fight scheduled for Saturday. Munguia is a living dog and probably the hardest puncher Canelo has faced in a long time.
There have been calls from boxing officials for Canelo to face another Mexican, hard-hitting David Benavidez, instead.
But what am I missing from Munguia that doesn't make him a worthy opponent? Not a hell of a matchup. Two Mexicans. You can't go wrong.
When Munguia is attacked, something happens. We saw Munguia's power against John Ryder, who put Canelo the distance last year.
Benavidez is in great form with a number of knockouts, but Canelo isn't saying he's done after Munguia. I truly believe a Benavidez fight will happen, but it's not happening right now.
