update: It turns out Tim Cook was misunderstood in a CNBC article. Apple is injecting AI support into its silicon, but the entire quote in context doesn't mean his AI software will be announced at next week's hardware event. Here is the complete quote in context:
“Looking ahead, we are gearing up for some exciting product announcements next week that we think our customers will love. And next month we will be hosting the Worldwide Developer Conference, where we will see tremendous enthusiasm from developers. We can't wait to see what we have in store.”
Additionally, a pause is inserted to explain what happened.
“And we're getting into a period of so much excitement that we're literally sitting on the edge of our seats because next week we have a product event that we're looking forward to. And just a few weeks after that, , the Worldwide Developer Conference is coming up and we have some big plans to announce at both of these events. [pause] From an AI perspective…
Apple is still expected to announce AI software innovations at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
Original story before modification:
Apple CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that he will discuss AI at next week's iPad event. Cook reportedly said that Apple “plans to announce big plans” for AI at its May event and June developer conference.
According to CNBC, in an earnings interview he said:
Cook also said Apple has “big plans to announce” from an “AI perspective” at next week's iPad event and June's annual developer conference.
This isn't the first time Apple has teased big AI news coming this year, but reports this week confirmed that next week's iPad event will have an AI perspective.
All year long, Cook has been teasing investors about Apple's upcoming AI announcements. In February, Apple's CEO hinted that AI news would be announced later this year, hinting at iOS 18. Later that month, Cook declared that Apple would “break new ground” with generative AI in 2024.
Last November, he announced during an earnings call that Apple was considering generative AI from a responsible perspective. Previously, the company's policy was that Apple had been investing in generative AI technology “for years.”
Apple's next event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 7th at 10am ET. WWDC will be held in one month, and his opening keynote is set for Monday, June 10th.
