SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – May is Women's Health Month, and Avera Family Physician Dr. Kate Booth shared steps women can take to maintain and improve their health.
Although most women are good at scheduling health exams for their family, sometimes they forget to do it themselves. Why is it important for women to have regular appointments?
Even if you feel well, you need to see your doctor regularly. These visits can help you stay healthy and avoid future problems, such as:
- Screening for medical problems
- Assess the risk of future medical problems
- Promoting a healthy lifestyle
- Latest information on vaccinations and other preventive health services
- Helps you know your healthcare provider in case of illness
What tests are important for women?
There are a number of tests that every woman should book, and the frequency will vary depending on where she is in her life.
- Breast Cancer Screening: Self-exams are great, but the best way for women to protect themselves from breast cancer is to schedule annual mammograms starting at age 40.
- Cervical cancer screening: Women should have cervical cancer screening every three years starting at the age of 21. Your doctor will advise you on whether to transition every 5 years while keeping your health in good condition.
- Other Screenings: Colonoscopies and skin cancer screenings for women are good ways to lead a healthy life.
Heart disease is the number one killer of women and can strike without warning. What can women do to keep their minds healthy?
Heart disease is a silent killer, and you can't always see things like high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels, but by talking to your doctor, you can develop a plan to lower these numbers and lower your risk. You can't control your family history, but it can help you take action.
High blood pressure is a precursor to stroke or heart attack. Diet and exercise can help lower your risk, but also ask your doctor about medications that may help.
What is the biggest message you want women to take away from this conversation?
Don't be afraid to put yourself first. Take time to improve your health for your friends and family. It's easy to put things off or ignore the symptoms, but it can ultimately make things worse.
