EMMET COUNTY — Next week, voters in Emmet, Charlevoix and northern Antrim counties will see a special education village fee renewal request from Charem ISD on their ballots.
The millage was first approved in 1980 and has been updated every four years. The request is for a 1.4606-mil renewal, generating approximately $10.3 million annually, according to an ISD release.

The funds will help reimburse special education-related costs for the Chaem School District, ISD-operated classrooms, and Patricia A. Taylor School. It will also help fund specialized training and assessment services for teachers. This funding will also be used to provide special transportation for students with disabilities and job and college preparation.
“This millage was first approved by voters in 1980 and has been updated every four years since then,” Char-Em ISD Superintendent Scott Koziol said in a release. “This disaster is impacting the lives of thousands of students and their families in the region, from newborns to students as young as 26 years old, including their lives after school. All Char-Em ISD School Districts provides important services to students with disabilities.

Koziol noted that the language on the ballot calls for an increase, not a renewal, because of the state's request regulations. The previous renewal expired on December 31, 2023, so technically this is a new levy.
Voting will take place on May 7th from 7am to 8pm. Voters in Alancon, Beaver Island, Boyne City, Boyne Falls, Central Lake, Charlevoix, Ellsworth, East Jordan, Harbor Springs, Pellston and Petoskey school districts will be asked to vote. About the proposal.
