Students from across the county participated in the annual environmental skills competition Friday at Chapman State Park.
The conservation group was founded in 1991, according to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. “It is an outdoor academic event designed to test high school students' knowledge and understanding of natural resource issues and foster students' desire to learn more about the natural world.”
Tidioute Community Charter School won the varsity division with a team consisting of Logan Sabella, Caleb Hart, Owen Heenan, Aiden Baylor and Caleb Morningstar.
The highest JV honor is “Megs” Youngsville High School Team – Shay Riley, Machi Benton, Emma Groves, Gabby Hodak.
Gene Gomory, watershed specialist for the Warren County Conservation District, said students participated in five test sites: soils, wildlife, aquatic and forestry, and then this year they participated in a test site based on current problems. said. “Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Future”.
Each team will spend approximately 35 minutes at each station and can earn up to 100 points in each area.
“Whether we win or lose, we hope that our students will have a deeper interest and awareness of the environment.” Gomory said. “Even if you don't work in the environmental field, it's useful to know about the world we live in.
“We hope they will apply the knowledge they have learned to their daily lives and find ways to conserve resources and be conscious of their impact on the environment.”
