TikTok has released an updated report on the safety of its e-commerce platform, announcing that it has blocked 37 million attempted product listings on its online shop.
The report, which covers the period from July to December 2023, said the social media giant also blocked the registration of 2 million merchant accounts for not meeting the site's registration requirements.
Since its initial launch in 2021, TikTok Shop has grown to now host a network of 15 million sellers worldwide, with 6 million of them joining the platform in the second half of 2023 alone.
In its latest safety report, TikTok removed 133,000 individual products after they were posted on the site, disabled accounts and removed products from more than 1 million sellers due to policy violations. He said he did.
Additionally, e-commerce functionality was removed from more than 500,000 creators due to rule violations.
Jan Wilk, Head of Operations at TikTok Shop UK, said: “As we enable thousands of businesses to sell millions of products, the TikTok Shop Safety Report is an important step forward for our community. It demonstrates our continued investment in creating a safer and more trusted shopping experience.”
The social media company said it spent more than US$400m (£319m) in 2023 investing in tools, technology and people to keep the marketplace safe for consumers and businesses.
TikTok Shop's growth comes after President Joe Biden signed a bill giving the platform's parent company ByteDance nine months to sell TikTok's U.S. operations or face a ban in the country. This comes despite continued uncertainty over the app.
The move comes after some American politicians have long called for a ban on TikTok, citing security concerns over ByteDance's relationship with China.
Many governments around the world, including the UK, have already banned the app from government devices.
