ALPENA — Alcona Health Center began construction last spring on a new 6,400-square-foot pediatric facility at the US-23 North Campus, 1209 US-23 N. in Alpena Township, and officials announced the facility will open Friday.
The new building has six patient rooms, including a treatment room for children who need immediate assistance and a room with sofas for behavioral exams.
The facility, which includes pediatrician Dr. Leah Convoy, nurse practitioner Dr. Mari Anderson, and child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Adrian Westphal, is accepting new patients in its new location.
Malinda Amrot, community outreach and marketing manager for Arkona Health Center, said the three health care providers already work for the organization, but this is the first time the new facility has been able to work together under the same roof. .
“We're very excited to have (Westphal) on board because she's a child and adolescent psychiatrist, and it's hard to find doctors like that,” Amlot said. said. “Access to care is a huge barrier, especially for behavioral health care for children. So having all of these providers in one place is a huge help for parents and a huge barrier to health care for adolescents. Both behavioral health care is definitely needed in the community.”
Amrotte said the facility had already had a soft launch on April 1, and children have already started receiving health checkups at the pediatric center.
Parents can begin registering their children to meet with one of three health care providers, but anyone who wants to speak with a health care provider first can attend the Friday 3:30 p.m. You will be able to meet with medical professionals at the cutting ceremony and open house to the public.
Nancy Spencer, CEO of Arkona Health Center, emphasized the importance of meeting the growing demand for pediatric health services in the region.
“By providing comprehensive services in one location, we can simplify access to quality pediatric care in our region,” Spencer said in a statement. “We are proud of this new facility and encourage the community to join us in celebrating its opening.”
Construction of the building was funded by a September 2021 federal American Rescue Plan Act Health Center Construction and Capital Improvements Grant of $845,411, which accounted for approximately 51% of the construction cost, with Alcona Health Center contributing the remaining cost ( Approximately $833,575) will be supported through nonprofit organizations. -Government sources.
The building has its own address and separate driveway, but because it is located on the Alpena Township campus, the parking lot is connected to other Alcona Health Center facilities.
“We're really excited to open because the main campus is right next door,” Amlot said. “We have a walk-in service for parents on Saturdays, so if you know your child is sick, there is a pharmacy right next door down the hill that you can access on Saturdays. Hopefully it will make things very convenient for the family.”
