As thousands of volunteers step up to help in the aftermath of Friday's tornado, the Douglas County Health Department is encouraging volunteers to stay safe. Health Commissioner Lindsey Hughes said the severe tornado devastated areas in Douglas County and increased the risk of tetanus. DCHD recommends that anyone involved in cleaning activities have a tetanus vaccination that is current for at least 10 years. The Tetanus Vaccine Clinic will be held from Sunday, April 28 through May 2 at the Common Ground Community Center in Elkhorn from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. DCHD said in a press release that the clinic was affected by Friday's storm and its aftermath. Children under 18 years of age Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to receive the vaccine. DCHD said anyone who sustains a minor injury such as a cut or scrape while volunteering and it has been more than five years since their last vaccination should be up-to-date with their vaccination.
