Two US senators have written a bipartisan letter to federal agencies about the potential use of crypto assets by child abusers.
In a letter, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Democrat of Massachusetts, and Sen. Bill Cassidy, Republican of Louisiana, said in a new press release that digital assets “pay for choice” for explicit content involving children. He said that.
The letter was sent to both the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In their letter, the senators detailed their concerns about the anonymity of crypto assets and their illegal use in such ways.
“We express our concerns regarding the use of cryptocurrencies in the illegal trafficking of child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) and obtain information on the tools required by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS). I am writing this letter to ask you to end this illegal trade.
The anonymity provided by cryptocurrencies allows CSAM payments to “move quickly into the world of cryptocurrencies,” and we hope Congress and the government will end CSAM and punish sellers of this material. We are committed to making sure you have the tools you need to succeed. ”
The senators cite data from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), and market intelligence platform Chainalysis to strengthen their case.
FinCEN reports that from 2020 to 2021, the use of crypto assets to purchase CSAM has increased, and financial institutions have reported thousands of suspicious activities related to human trafficking and child trafficking involving Bitcoin (BTC). A report was released clarifying that the government had submitted a report.
According to IWF, the number of websites accepting crypto assets as CSAM payments doubled annually from 2018 to 2022.
In January 2024, Chainalysis went public with its crypto assets, which became the “primary option for buyers and sellers of commercial child sexual abuse content.”
