The Spanish government has set up a special committee to oversee the country's football federation (RFEF).
The commission will be in place until the governing body holds new elections in the wake of the scandal surrounding former president Luis Rubiales.
Separately, he is scheduled to stand trial on sexual assault charges for kissing Spain's Jenni Hermoso after last summer's World Cup final.
The country's National Sports Council (CSD) said the government's intervention was made “in response to an organizational crisis and to protect Spain's overall interests.”
“The Spanish government has taken this decision in order to rectify the serious situation facing RFEF and allow the organization to begin a period of regeneration,” it added.
The council is the government body responsible for sport in Spain, and a statement from the council added that it would be headed by an “independent person of recognized reputation”.
World soccer governing body FIFA and European governing body UEFA said they were closely monitoring the situation with great concern.
FIFA regulations stipulate that member countries must manage their affairs independently, without influence from third parties.
“FIFA and UEFA will assess the extent to which the appointment of the so-called “Supervision, Normalization and Representation Committee'' by the CSD affects the RFEF's obligation to manage its affairs independently and without undue government interference. “We will be seeking additional information to ensure this,” they said. Joint statement.
An investigation into corruption during Rubiales' tenure led police to raid RFEF's headquarters in Madrid last month, resulting in the dismissal of other members of the federation.
Pedro Rocha, who was acting as the president's deputy, also came under investigation after testifying as a witness in a corruption investigation.
Rocha, who is the only candidate to succeed Rubiales as permanent president, said he has “no knowledge of the facts being investigated and therefore does not assume any responsibility.”
Spain defeated England in the final to win the 2023 Women's World Cup and are preparing to co-host the 2030 Men's World Cup.
