Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran, April 25, 2024 – Dr. Hanan Balki made his first official visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran as the new Regional Director-General for the Eastern Mediterranean region from April 12 to 15. finished. The regional director's visit began in the historical city of Isfahan, where he visited the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences and met with Rector Shahin Shirani, who is also the president of the Isfahan Academy of Medical Sciences. She also met with university faculty and other Ministry of Health and Medical Education officials. Dr Balki said: “It is impressive to see how high-quality integrative medical education has played a role in improving health services in this country, leading to longer life expectancies, lower mortality rates and increased vaccination coverage. ” he said.
With more than 800 research centers, the Islamic Republic of Iran has made significant efforts to expand its research capacity. Dr. Balki visited the Isfahan Cardiovascular Institute, one of the 16 WHO collaborating centers in the country. The institute focuses on research, training and patient rehabilitation in the field of cardiovascular diseases. The country's investments in evidence generation are building the knowledge base for health workers and strengthening the resilience of health systems.
Dr Balki then met with United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator Stefan Priesner, along with representatives from other UN agencies. The focus was on the important role of multisectoral collaboration in health promotion and the long-term socio-economic benefits of preventive health measures. They considered ways to improve advocacy for the important work that the Islamic Republic of Iran does on behalf of its people, including more than 5 million refugees and migrants. Priority areas for collaboration between UN agencies were also discussed.
During a meeting between Dr. Balki and the Minister of Health and Medical Education and his representatives, His Excellency Dr. Baharam Einolahi said that more than 96% of the population has health insurance. He also said the country is committed to strengthening primary health care networks and family health programs. Strengthen prevention and health promotion. More than 92% of essential medicines are produced locally. To build on such outstanding achievements, Dr. Balki reiterated WHO's support for Iran's health system, especially primary health care to promote universal health coverage.
In a meeting with Iranian First Lady Dr. Jamile Alamolhoda, mental and psychological health was discussed as an important aspect of public health alongside physical health. WHO continues to work with Member States for the overall health and well-being of their populations.
Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian met with Dr. Balki to discuss health and diplomatic issues to reduce the burden of disease and build safer communities. Among the topics discussed was the impact of sanctions on public health. Transnational transmission of infectious diseases. The influx of refugees is contributing to this challenge. The Islamic Republic of Iran is keen to strengthen cooperation with the WHO to find and implement appropriate solutions.
