US health officials on Tuesday issued a warning about counterfeit Botox injections that sickened 22 people.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, half of the patients were taken to the hospital. The agency issued a warning to doctors on Tuesday.
Cases began in early November and have been reported in 11 states. The CDC said vaccinations were given by unlicensed or untrained individuals or in settings such as homes or spas. Most said they received botulinum toxin injections for cosmetic reasons.
Six people were treated for suspected botulism, health officials said. If botulinum toxin enters the bloodstream, it can cause botulism. Botulism is a fatal disease that causes symptoms such as double vision, blurred vision, droopy eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and difficulty breathing.
Health officials said people should only get their shots from licensed professionals and should report any suspected counterfeit products.
