Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker wants to eliminate medical debt for up to 1 million people in the state over time.
And Iowa school employees will likely be allowed to carry guns on campus as a first line of defense in the event of a violent attack.
Host Jim Needelman speaks with former Rock Island County Republican Party Chairman Drew Mielke and former Rock Island Mayor Mark Schwiebert, a Democrat.
Pritzker is making the rounds to promote one of his priorities in his budget speech: wiping out medical debt for 340,000 people in the state.
His current proposal is to invest $10 million to eliminate $1 billion in debt. He hopes to reach 1 million people and reach $4 billion in total revenue over the next few years.
We understand that people with weak health insurance can be saddled with tens of thousands of dollars in bills that they can't pay.
“My understanding is that it also includes funding for immigrants and medical expenses for illegal aliens, so some people may be up in arms,” Mielke said.
“I think immigration is highly exaggerated,” Schwiebert said. “This is very sound policy.”
