MIAMI-DADE, Southwest Florida (WSVN) – New surveillance video shows a group of thieves trying to steal a luxury car at night in southwest Miami-Dade, but ultimately failing.
The video, obtained exclusively by 7News, shows thieves outside a Miami business owner's home last month attempting to take his Mercedes Benz and BMW from his driveway.
The footage shows the subjects getting into a white BMW, jumping over a fence and moving towards two luxury cars they are trying to steal.
One of the subjects begins fiddling with the Mercedes before the two get into the car. But shortly after, the video shows them unable to figure out how to open the gate of the house to get out of the crime scene.
They fumble for a first goal, but ultimately fail and decide to flee the scene.
All of this is recorded by the Ring camera security system, which sends real-time alerts to homeowners.
A chime heard from the homeowner's phone means a crime has occurred.
The victim of the attempted carjacking was Jorge Zbigaray, owner of Gulf Liquors in Miami Beach.
“I love the beach,” Zbigaray said.
When Zbigarai is not at home, he works at the store.
Known as a liquor store owner to the stars, his store has a wall of fame inscribed with the names of famous people to whom he has sold alcohol and said “Cheers.”
“I've been here 24 years,” Zbigaray said.
Sometimes, when he's not serving customers, he shows shoplifters the door in his own colorful way.
However, on the night of March 14th, an alarm went off on his cell phone and he was in trouble at home due to an attempted carjacking.
“They backed up to the gate but were unable to unlock it,” Zbigaray said. “We've secured the gate.”
The night was difficult enough for Zbigaray, who told 7News she had just attended her father's funeral a few hours earlier.
“I just buried my father. I went back outside around 2 a.m. and saw my car by the gate. Then I looked at the camera and saw a man jumping over the gate,” Zbigaray said. said.
Miami-Dade police arrived shortly after the thieves left the scene.
Police are still searching for a pair of amateur robbers who came after Zbigaray's car but got nothing.
“The prize is $5,000,” Zbigalai said.
Mr Zbigaray said car thieves were not successful with his car, but they managed to get away with his McLaren.
