The presence of artificial intelligence (AI) in mainstream media has steadily increased in recent years, with many countries already adopting AI in various aspects such as local broadcasting and publishing.
It is undeniable that many people around the world are still coming to terms with the penetration of technology into many industries, as well as pointing out the ethical implications for employment. However, many also acknowledge the fact that artificial intelligence (AI), if used correctly, has the potential to become a tool in media, broadcasting, and journalism.
China was the first country to move to employ AI-generated news anchors in 2018. The country's state-run news agency, Xinhua News Agency, and Chinese technology company Sogou developed the first AI anchor, which was unveiled at the 2018 World Internet Conference in Wuzhen. , Zhejiang Province, China.
Xinhua News Agency and Sogou developed and patterned the AI anchor after actual Xinhua news anchors. One of them was an English-speaking caster named after Zhang Zhao, and the other was a Chinese-speaking caster named after Qiu Hao. In 2019, the company introduced its first female AI anchor, Xin Xiaomeng, who debuted at the political conference “Two Sessions” in March 2019.
A few years later, in 2023, the world began to adapt to the era of AI technology, especially in the field of journalism. More countries, including Asia and Europe, are introducing their own AI news anchors.
