Homegrown electro-pop artist Cub Sport wins ARIA No. 1 Collection Album of the Year Jesus in a gay barand won the electronic award for “Songs About It.”
“This is very unexpected,” drummer Dan Puusari said from the stage as Cub Sports won Album of the Year. “We've been a band for 13 years, and we won our first QMA 12 years ago, so it's pretty cool to be still here and still making music. It's a huge privilege. This is us. It's the fifth record I've made. It's really great to be recognized like this.”
Jem Cassar Daly won both the pop award and the QMA's highest honor, song of the year, for “King of Disappointment.”
With the Song of the Year award, Cassar Daley, the daughter of local country great Troy Cassar Daley, will be honored with a Walk of Fame memorial at the city's Brunswick Street Mall. You've acquired the best real estate.
While accepting the trophy, Cassar Daly said: “To all of you in this room who inspired me to pursue music even when everything was locked down and we all lost gigs due to the coronavirus pandemic. I am grateful.”
Composer Geoff Bush won the Children's Music Award for “Dance Mode,'' written for the popular animated series, and the Music Award for “Cricket.'' Bluey.
Country veteran James Blundell has also recorded 14 studio albums, won nine CMAA Golden Guitar Awards, and been inducted into the CMAA Roll of Renown and the CMC Hall of Fame. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his decades-long career, which led to him being inducted into the Hall of Fame. fame.
“This is an acknowledgment of survival,” he said of his recent award, celebrating with his family. “As I tell all the young artists I work with, longevity is a big part of the equation. Even if you can be great for a moment, you need to be a little more interesting to sustain your career. (laughs) Now, I've never claimed to be an interesting artist, nor did I ever intend to be, but I have lived very much in the public eye, quite honestly. So I'm very grateful to receive this award.”
Other winners include Busby Murrow (Blues/Roots Award), DZ Deathrays (Major Award), Tia Gostelow (Indigenous Award), and Sahara Beck (Soul/Funk/RnB Category).
“We're very proud Queenslanders and we're inspired by all the young guys coming up, and of course all the old guys,” says one half of Rockhampton roots act Busby Murrow. Thomas Busby said. “The beauty of making music,” he added, is that “you make friends along the way and you keep them forever.”
The 2024 Queensland Music Awards are produced by QMusic with support from the Queensland Government. Guests in the room included Queensland Premier Stephen Miles.
