FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – If asked to identify a successful school, many would focus on their academic excellence. The Kings Canyon Middle School principal says it's much more than that.
“When we think about academic progress, it's deeply tied to social equity. Do all the kids who come to Kings Canyon have the same educational experience, the same opportunities to succeed, and how do we make that happen?” What are we doing to create a unique experience?'' said Principal Landon Airanjian.
Kings Canyon is on the right track. This year, for the third time, Fresno Unified Middle School has been named a California School to Watch.
“Three redesignations are a process where every three years we look at ourselves and seriously consider where we've been and say we're going to take the next step. What we tried to do was actually Were you able to achieve this?”
Kings Canyon still has work to do to reach that goal, but being a featured school doesn't mean it's perfect. It assesses whether a school's organizational structure supports student learning and puts them on the path to success.
“We put a lot of emphasis on getting to know our kids as people, not just their test scores,” said teacher librarian Laura Matthews. “It allows students to find teachers who care about who they are, which allows them to excel in the classroom.”
Everyone can see some of the improvements the school is developing, such as the addition of arts programs and ag pathways. There's also a change in campus culture and a sense of pride that everyone recognizes.
“Students and teachers have a lot to do with this issue because they are connected to each other. , how we all behave, etc.,” said student Jair Ibarra.
“We have always believed wholeheartedly that we exist to represent our community. That is our purpose, that is our role, and if we don’t do that, we will never leave this door.” It would be better to close it,” Airanjan said.
Kings Canyon is one of two Fresno Unified schools designated as a Rising Star School.
