Charlotte, North Carolina (queen city news) — The Queen City will host four major sporting events in 2023, with significant economic benefits, according to data released Thursday by Charlotte Regional Tourism.
The Charlotte Sports Foundation announced $79.7 million was generated by the Jumpin Invitational, Dukes Mayo Classic, Aly Tipov and Dukes Mayo Bowl.
“Our success in 2023 is a direct result of the incredible support from all of our partners,” CSF Executive Director Danny Morrison said in a released statement. “The harmony that exists in Charlotte creates opportunities to host these high-profile events, especially in some of our larger venues, which not only drives economic impact, but also the quality of life for people living in the area. It makes a positive impact.”
In addition to the $79.7 million, CSF said it also generated $42.9 million in direct spending and $2.5 million in taxes. More than 70,000 hotel rooms were booked during these events, and more than 216,000 fans attended. The Dukes Classic at Bank of America Stadium was one of the top three busiest days for attendees in Uptown Charlotte. 16.7 million people watched the event on television.
“Sporting events are a significant contributor to the region's $7.3 billion visitor economy, and this market segment accounts for the majority of the annual hotel nights booked by CRVA,” said Steve Bagwell, CEO of CRVA. It's a thing,” he said. “Our partnership with the Charlotte Sports Foundation is critical to creating positive economic activity for our local communities. When we promote and host strategic sporting events, our partnership with the Charlotte Sports Foundation is critical to their industry connections and operations. Expertise is essential. This collaboration has been incredibly successful in attracting visitors, increasing media exposure and delivering a great experience in the Queen City.”
The Charlotte Sports Foundation announced that $2.7 million of the proceeds were donated to charities including Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
