The NBCA Centers of Excellence designation recognizes excellence in blood clot clinical outcomes, patient education, and posthospital patient care.
The National Blood Clot Alliance has named Corewell Health Grand Rapids Hospitals – Butterworth Hospital the nation's first NBCA Center of Excellence.
NBCA, the nation's only patient advocacy organization dedicated to promoting the prevention, early diagnosis, and successful treatment of venous thrombosis, recognizes our commitment to excellence in patient outcomes and the NBCA's focus on patient education and posthospitalization. We created this designation to emphasize combined clinical practice. Care.
“For too long, NBCA has seen firsthand the gaps in venous thromboembolism (VTE) patient care,” said Justin Crockett, board member and NBCA committee chair. “By designating Corewell Health as a Center of Excellence, we are recognizing the company's commitment to both clinical excellence and patient education.”
The process for designating Corewell Health as an NBCA Center of Excellence was rigorous. The committee evaluated standards of care for VTE, reviewed historical results and timeliness of reporting, and compared them to established benchmarks.
It also included a site visit by the committee and meetings with both Corewell Health administrators and clinicians to validate the COE application. Finally, the committee evaluated community education efforts in clinical and post-clinical settings.
Dr. Michael Knox, an interventional radiologist at Corewell Health, said that by partnering with NBCA, their team will continue to improve the process of identifying and treating patients suffering from blood clots in West Michigan. He said he is doing so.
“We are inspired by NBCA leaders, many of whom are PE survivors,” Knox said. “We appreciate the tireless dedication of many at Corewell Health in this mission and look forward to our continued collaboration with NBCA.”
Dr. Alejandro Quiroga, President of CoreWell Health, said this recognition recognizes the proven excellence of CoreWell Health's programs in treating patients with acute and chronic VTE.
“When patients seek treatment at Corewell Health, they can live the healthiest lives possible knowing they are receiving care that compares favorably to the best in the country.” he said.
NBCA plans to expand its Centers of Excellence across the United States to provide quality VTE care to all Americans. This certification is a major step forward in doing just that.
