NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Sports betting tends to be very popular in March, when all eyes are on the women’s and men’s NCAA basketball tournaments.
Online-only sports betting began in Tennessee in November 2021 for those 21 and older. There are currently 13 licensed online sportsbooks in the state, 12 of which are operational.
The Tennessee Sports Wagering Council (SWC) announced that it collected $58.5 million in privilege taxes from licensed online sportsbooks in Tennessee from July 1, 2023 to February 29, 2024. Tennessee sports bettors bet $3.18 billion during the same period.
By law, 80% of the privilege tax generated in a fiscal year goes to the Education Lottery account, 15% goes to the general fund to be disbursed to local governments, and the remaining 5% goes to the Tennessee Mental Health and Drug Administration. It will be sent to the Abuse Services Bureau. .
In Kentucky, as of September 2023, residents 18 and older can place sports bets both online and in-person.
In the case of Tennessee and Kentucky, you do not need to be a resident of the state to bet as long as you are physically within the state's borders.
