QUEENS, Jamaica — The State University of New York York College of Teacher Education is launching Governor Kathy Hochul's Paraprofessional Skills Development Program to transition paraprofessionals in bilingual and English as a new language classrooms to fully certified teachers in those areas. This program addresses critical teacher shortage areas to meet the needs of multilingual P-12 students in schools in York's partner school districts. District partners for this program include New York City public schools, specifically District 29 and Queens South High Schools, and Valley Stream Central High School District. Participating paraprofessionals receive scholarships, scholarships, mentorship, and programs tailored to the development of their expertise as educators.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced Friday that $13.7 million in workforce development awards have been allocated to 12 New York State universities as part of the Education Workforce Investment. His eight grants totaling $9.5 million were awarded under the Substitute Teacher Certification Program and his four grants totaling $4.2 million were awarded under the Paraprofessional Skills Upskilling Program.
“We have a responsibility to ensure that future teachers and paraprofessionals are prepared to educate and support the next generation of New Yorkers,” Governor Hochul said in a media release. “Through this funding for workforce development programs, we are investing in educators and creating pathways for students to pursue careers in education.”
In addition to York University, Upskill Paraprofessional award winners include Medgar Evers College, State University of New York at Cortland, Empire State University, and more. Recipients of the Alternative Teacher Certification Program are Brooklyn College, Hunter College, Adelphi University, Bank Street School of Education, State University of New York at Cortland, Fordham University, Manhattanville College, and Utica College.
The grant will support the project over the next four years.
