Speaking to the world's press on Sunday, Pope Francis recalled to the approximately 15,000 pilgrims and faithful following Regina Celli's prayers gathered in St. Peter's Square: international day of sport for development and peace It is celebrated on April 6th every year.
World Day was established by the United Nations as an opportunity to recognize the positive role that sport and physical activity play in the lives of communities and people around the world.
The global theme for 2024 is “Sports aimed at promoting a peaceful and inclusive society”.
The Pope endorsed that value, saying: “We all know how sports practice can teach open, cooperative and open-minded sociability.”
But, he continued, “For that to happen, we need leaders and trainers who are not just about winning or making money. Let's promote a sport that fosters social friendships and camaraderie!”

The Pope also recalled the bus accident in South Africa's Limpopo province that killed 45 people on their way to the Easter Conference on Maundy Thursday.
“I would like to remember those who died in the bus accident in South Africa a few days ago. Let's pray for them and their families,” he said.
