Salvino, the Grand Prix horse that gave US Olympian Adrian Lyle his breakthrough, has been retired.
The news comes just days after Adrian was confirmed as a candidate for the U.S. Olympic team, riding new horse Lars van de Honderheide and Helix at CDI Wellington from March 28-31, 2024. Announced on April 4th.
sandroner hall
Salvino is a 17-year-old Hannover-bred stallion by Dynasty's Sandro Hitt (Donner Hall x Brentano II x Imperator).
Produced by Joachim Essink, it was originally named Sandroner Hall.
The stallion was sold to Spain as a young man, and his owner, Susana Vázquez Mostaza, took part in his first race at the age of five. He competed in the Vejer de la Frontera and Toledo CDI young horse classes in 2012.
A year later, Spaniard Antonio Díaz Porras, now based in the United States, coached him in the International 6-Year-Old Young Horse Class held at the CDI in Toledo and Madrid. The pair qualified for the 2013 World Young Horse Championships, but did not compete at Verden. Diaz Porras produced Sandroner Hall to the Green Grand Prix level.
Acquired by US syndicate
In the spring of 2015, German horse trader Jochen Ahl sold Sandroner Hall to an American syndicate led by Akiko Yamazaki. They gave the Hanoverian stallion “Salvino” a new name.
The ownership group is called Sandroner Hall Partners LLC, and is led by Mr. Yamazaki and managed by Jen Hlavacek and Bruce Hlavacek, owners of Weltino's Magic, which won the 2011 U.S. Pan Am team and individual gold medals. Was. Other investors include Betsy Giuliano, Elma Garcia-Cannabino, and Jim Cannabino.
The stallion was intended as a successor to Adrian Lyle's 2012 Olympic horse, Wizard.
career maker
Under the supervision of trainer Debbie McDonald, Lyle and Salvino became part of the U.S. team. They made their international show debut in 2017.
Lyle and Salvino represented the United States at the 2018 World Equestrian Games in Tryon, where they won a team silver medal and placed 29th in the special. He placed 7th at the 2019 World Cup Final in Gothenburg and 6th at the 2019 CDIO Aachen with Kur.
Betsy Giuliano took full ownership of the horse in 2018.
minor injury
Salvino suffered a minor injury that resulted in a 13-month hiatus from performances in 2020. Salvino resurfaced at the final event of the 2021 World Dressage Festival, just in time to make his return to the Tokyo Olympic Trials.
They won the Olympic selection exam in June 2021 with an impressive score, and at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, they placed 14th in the Grand Prix with a score of 74.876%, qualifying them for the individual medal final as the 2nd place pair in Heat 4. With a score of 76.109%, Sabine Schutkelly and Sanseo were America's top scoring duo and helped the USA win the team silver medal.
The horse did not show optimal regularity in both mounts, but accomplished his mission in helping the United States win a team medal. He was pulled from the individual medal freestyle final in Tokyo.
Herning's Phoenix
After a seven-month hiatus, the pair will return to competition at CDI 5* in Wellington from February 24-26, 2022, winning four classes in quick succession at two CDIs with scores in the high 70s. did.
They were sent to Aachen, Germany as part of the U.S. team selection process and competed in the 4* tour rather than the CDIO 5* division. He took second place (76.891%) in the Grand Prix, but was eliminated in Kur to Music.
Lyle and Salvino have been selected to the U.S. team for the 2022 World Championships in Herning. Although the U.S. team fell to 6th place (bronze medal at the Tokyo Games), the two men individually gained momentum and took 9th place (75.699%) in the special. And it ranks 6th in Cool (83.704%). They have been named the 2022 U.S. International Equestrian Athlete of the Year.
swan song
The 2023 goal is set for the World Cup final in Omaha, USA, and the dressage world was hoping it would be Salvino's retirement performance on home soil.
He won two CDI-W World Cup qualifiers, held in Wellington in December 2022 and in Wellington on January 12 and 13, 2023, with the highest score achieved by the US pair to that point. But the colic scare happened in February, and soon after, Team Salvino announced. That they removed the horse from the race to Omaha because the horse had removed a small splint.
Since then, the stallion has remained tight-lipped on questions about his return or retirement, but owner Betsy Giuliano and jockey Adrian Lyle have said the stallion has his sights set on competing at the Paris Olympics. It seems that he maintained this idea.
Heidi Humphries' sudden purchase of two Grand Prix horses confirmed as Lyle's Olympic candidates in late December 2023 was a clear sign that Salvino's return was unlikely. The horse's absence from the entire 2024 12-week show circuit in Wellington confirms that belief.
retirement
Salvino won the World Cup Qualifier on January 13, 2023 with 83.540%, which ultimately turned out to be his last victory and tournament. On April 4, 2024, they announced the horse's retirement from competition.
In an official press release, Giuliano said: “Although Salvino is still very healthy and energetic, Adrian and I believe that the rigor of the qualification process, in addition to his preparation for the Olympics, is not in his long-term interests. I feel that way,” he said. He will soon move into his retirement life riding horses at his home. We are also very proud to offer Salvino for breeding. ”
“This was a very difficult decision to make, but most importantly we feel it's the right one for him,” trainer Lyle said in a press release. “He continues to ride at home, work and train other horses. I love to show you what's going on,” he added. “He gave us so much, and Betsy and I will do everything we can to continue to live his best life.”
Adrian also posted on Facebook: “You were everyone's best friend, teammate, partner, and an absolute warrior in the ring. Every time we stepped down the center line, you were my You supported me…even when I was nervous, you accepted it.” You led and taught me that there was nothing to be afraid of…Even when I messed up, you picked up the slack and did it right anyway…Even when I doubted myself, you taught me It reminded me that we can make it happen. As I crossed the final center line, I whispered under my breath, “Take me home, buddy”…I can always feel you getting up another foot off the ground and giving it your all. It's done. You taught me that if you really believe in something, don't bow your head and work hard until the rest of the world believes in it too. ”
