HARLEY, Miss. (WLOX) – Most high school students typically leave the stadium after a game, but East Central senior Mackenzie Knight usually stays a little longer to get to the heart of the matter. Masu.
Knight has always had a passion for sports and storytelling.
“I've always been into sports, and I love all sports. But baseball has always been my favorite,” she said.
That's why she started working toward that passion in 2022, starting with postgame interviews with East Central classmates on the baseball diamond and elsewhere.
“The community, coaches and athletes all have an interest in this,” she added. “They're like, 'When's the interview? When are you available for the shoot?'” There are a lot of games out there, so it's probably going to be readily available. But how does everyone say how great they are and what awaits them every week. I love how everyone is so supportive. ”
Those postgame interviews have now grown into something more in partnership with local publication 228 Sports, expanding into coverage of other schools, teams and sports.
“It's good for me to step out of my comfort zone,” she said. “I've always played soccer, baseball, basketball and volleyball. So doing something I'm not used to is going to help me grow in this career.”
In addition to that, she says she loves making new connections and seeing different athletic journeys across the coast.
“Interviewing people outside of my team allows me to meet other people and make connections, because you never know if you'll meet them in the future,” she added.
McKenzie plans to head to Mississippi State in the fall to earn a degree in sports broadcasting and turn that degree into a career.
After that, like all good reporters, she'll go where the story takes her.
“I would like to participate in college sports first, but in the future I would like to be on an MLB team,” she said. “I would love to cover the College World Series at least once in my life. So it depends on where God has me.
