The U.S. secretaries of education and labor visited Reno on Wednesday and announced plans for the Biden administration to expand high-quality, affordable programs, increase salaries, and strengthen working conditions across early childhood education, K-12, and higher education. “We are prioritizing what I call the ABCs of progress: educator autonomy and ownership, improved working conditions, and competitive pay,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. ” he said.

“When you graduate from university, you go to work as an apprentice teacher and work as an apprentice teacher for free for four months. You can't do that. On Wednesday, clerks organized a roundtable discussion with the Washoe County Board of Education, educators, state and local leaders, and union representatives. The main topic discussed was recent union negotiations that resulted in the state providing additional matching funds. The negotiations resulted in a Washoe County School District teacher's salary increase of about 20% over his two years.
“Here in Washoe County, we saw teachers achieve historic pay increases after negotiating at the bargaining table,” Sue said.
