As part of an overhaul of its employee compensation plan, Houston Independent School District (HISD) is increasing pay across the board for special education teachers. In her next 2024-2025 school year, the minimum salary for a special education teacher will be her $80,000. For New Education System (NES) campuses, that number would be $86,000.
Previously, HISD special education teacher salaries were reduced to the standard K-12 teacher salary plus a $1,000 stipend.
“HISD is steadfastly committed to ensuring that students with special needs are identified, supported, and placed to achieve at high levels,” said Billy Solomon, Executive Director of Talent Acquisition. I am. “That is our responsibility. Fulfilling that responsibility begins by attracting and retaining quality educators and paying them like valued professionals.”
Special education teacher requirements include:
- Have a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited university
- TExES Special Education EC-12 Certification
- Core Content or Generalist Certification
“School districts across the country are facing a shortage of special education teachers,” Solomon said. “HISD is working to meet this challenge by offering special education teachers the most competitive compensation in the region, as well as providing them with the other supports they need to help their students. We are grateful to our teachers and to the families who entrusted their children to us.”
In March, HISD announced its compensation plan for next year. This document outlines how the district allocates resources to its highest priorities.
