Socceroos star Riley McGree has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a foot injury and will miss Australia's World Cup qualifiers against Bangladesh and Palestine in June.
Magley was injured during the Socceroos' 2-0 win over Lebanon at Sydney's CommBank Stadium on March 21.
The 25-year-old attacking midfielder did not play when the teams met again in Canberra last Tuesday, instead leaving camp in Australia early and returning to English Championship club Middlesbrough. .
Boro coach Michael Carrick subsequently announced that Magley would require surgery and would miss the remainder of the 2023-24 season.
“Riley will need surgery and will be out for the rest of the season,” Carrick said.
Magley was one of three Socceroos players injured in the two games against Lebanon.
Belgium-based Jordie Bosz is expected to be out for six weeks after injuring his knee after coming on as a substitute for Magley.
However, there was good news for playmaker Ajudin Hrstic. He was sent off after taking a nasty kick to the inside of his ankle during Australia's 5-0 win in Canberra.
Hrstić returned to the Netherlands in good form and was able to start for club team Hercules in a 1-0 loss to FC Twente at the weekend.
The 27-year-old Dandenong product played 84 minutes before being substituted.
Regardless of the result of Bangladesh's match against Palestine in June, the Socceroos have already secured a place in the Asian Football Confederation's third round of World Cup qualifying.
But Socceroos coach Graham Arnold wants his team to win both games to give Australia the best chance of making it into pot one with a draw in the third round.
