A hostage situation at a nightclub in a town in the eastern Netherlands has ended with the arrest of a man.
According to local media, four people were taken hostage in the early hours of Saturday morning when they entered the Café Petticoat in Ede under threat of blowing themselves up.
The first group of three was released, and the fourth emerged approximately seven hours after the incident began.
Police said the suspect's motive was not yet clear and their mental state was under investigation.
Authorities were alerted to a possible hostage situation at around 05:15 local time (4:15 GMT), Dutch broadcaster NOS reported.
East Netherlands Police's head of operations, Anne-Jan Oosterhart, said troops arrived at the scene within two minutes.
Officials said the suspect had a black backpack and several knives, which he showed the hostages.
Approximately 150 residents in the surrounding area were evacuated and the town center was closed.
Mayor René Verhulst said the incident had “affected many people” and “emotions were running high”.
The hostage was an employee who was cleaning the nightclub when the suspect entered the club, police said.
After the last hostage was released, the suspect emerged from the nightclub wearing a balaclava. He was then handcuffed and taken away by police.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal Units and police in protective gear were photographed at the scene. Railway operator NS announced on its website that trains to and from Ede have been cancelled.
Ms Austerhart said almost the entire police team of experts had been deployed.
She added that the hostages were being cared for after their release.
“We have spoken briefly to the victims and they are devastated. We are working with the local authority to ensure that all care and attention is taken to ensure they receive all the support they need. I’m going,” she said.
