WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) – Friday's local sports menu includes college softball and figure skating.
On the diamond, JCC opened the 2024 softball season on the turf, hosting OCC in a doubleheader.
In the bottom of the first inning, JCC took the lead on Katie Cole's double to right-center field. Emily Birmingham and Delaney Wiley both score: 2-0 JCC.
In the bottom of the 4th inning, Mackenzie Lane's hit to right field and Leah Kanell's score tied the score at 3, and JCC was back on top, 4-3.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, Caitlin Adams hits a suicide squeeze and Kaina Ward scores to tie the score: 5-3 JCC.
Delaney Wiley from the Thousand Islands did everything in her power to get the win with a strikeout.
JCC defeated OCC 5-3 in the first game, but would lose the second game 9-5.
The Watertown Figure Skating Club welcomed 1992 Olympic silver medalist Paul Wylie to Watertown on Friday.
Wiley is in town to serve as a guest coach at the Fairgrounds Ice Arena.
Wiley, who lives in Lake Placid, spent his days coaching club members both on and off the ice.
Wiley, who also won the U.S. National Championship and Junior World Championship in 1981, says he enjoys working with young skaters.
“Well, I love being involved in the whole community, and obviously this upstate New York community is a big area. Skaters saw that and it clicked. What that meant to me when I was 10 or 11 years old. I was able to work with people who knew what it was like, had that experience, and were then able to give me some keys that literally changed the course of my career. I think that's what you get out of it,” Wiley said.
