Runners, wake up bright and early for a scenic run in East Rockaway and get ready to hear the voice, “Ready to Go, Go!”
Get your running shoes ready for the East Rockaway Educational Foundation's 8th Annual 5K Run/Walk on April 6th at 8:30am. The event will take place rain or shine and will begin at 130 Hewlett Point Avenue in East Rockaway. Not only will this run make you feel good physically, but participants will also support East Rockaway School District's funding programs.
EREF Director Vera Gallagher explained that the 5K will start and end at the bayside parking lot on Hewlett Point Avenue. Elite Feats will be at the event and will time the runners. She said auxiliary police will also be present to help coordinate the race.
“We want to have a good mix of kids, parents, teachers, track clubs and students looking to find volunteer time,” Gallagher said.
5,000 registration fee is $30 and all proceeds from this event will support local students. This effort helped him raise more than $35,000 to support grant and scholarship programs for East Rockaway school students.
“Examples of approved grants include Art Club on the Move materials for grades 3-6,” Gallagher said in the release. “Another example of his is an orienteering compass that incorporates real-world geography skills.”
As reported on the EREF website, “smart boards, robotics and science lab equipment, innovative seating and furniture, author visits, makerspace materials, and scholarships will be funded through our grant program. It’s funded.”
Last year there were 120 registered runners and a total of $12,684 was raised. Most of the funding came from local sponsors. His 5,000 sponsors this year so far include Veolia. “Our hope this year is that more runners will participate,” Mr Gallagher said.
Gallagher said the event also doubles as a walk, so anyone who wants to bring their kids in a stroller, is in a wheelchair or just doesn't want to run can still participate in the event.
“Preparing for a 5K includes not eating too much before your run, stretching before and after your run, wearing the right shoes, and preparing for the weather by layering if necessary,” Gallagher says. said.
