Honoring Veterans and Working for Peace and Truth
Brooklyn: As a Vietnam veteran, I remember my daily service and oath to serve my country. My service in Vietnam in 1967-1968 brings constant memories. It's not just what happened in Vietnam, but the days that followed, and what I learned.
My belief is that the opposite of conflict is peace and that countries must strive for peace without physical aggression. Our country is a democracy with principles of equality and freedom. We support other countries with the same belief that freedom and human rights are paramount.
Today is National Vietnam War Veterans Day, a day to remember the service and consequences of all men before their discharge (in 1973) and after due to death and health issues.
In the North-South division of Vietnam, it was discovered that China supplies troops and supplies to the North, while the Soviet Union (Russia) supplies tanks and heavy weapons (missiles). The United States and its allies supported the South for many years. I learned from the Pentagon Papers (via Daniel Ellsberg). This document revealed that the American people were misled and the war was prolonged. This cost the lives of thousands of military and civilian personnel.
I salute all veterans, our military, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and especially the World War II generation, military, civilian, and allies for their solidarity. The goal must be to achieve domestic and world peace. Lewis Cohen
When I turn the other cheek
Bronx: Korean War Veteran voice actor Robert Adams seems furious with my opinion. So much so that he asked me to kiss his ass. You would think that a man in his prime who had served his country would know better by now. Mr. Adams, with all due respect, I think you should have left behind all the petty, vindictive nonsense and complaints and avoided getting caught up in political and ideological dogma, especially that of the left. And as a veteran, I appreciate your service. bob pascarella
please don't squat
PORT JEFFERSON STATION, LA: Given the many disturbing stories about squatters, we hope New York State will quickly address this issue. Squatters having rights over homeowners is a terrible situation that must be addressed before street justice does something the homeowner will regret. bob cavaliere
I get on an airplane
Trenton, NJ: President Biden's naming of business aviation in his State of the Union address and White House budget unfortunately paints an important productivity tool in a largely negative light. Companies use small aircraft to transport tools, personnel, and supplies, travel to otherwise inaccessible locations, quickly change travel plans, encourage team collaboration while traveling, and maximize operations. Because it has a clear functional advantage in helping you. Business aircraft support nearly every industry and sector in our country, including agriculture, construction, and food production. General aviation supports his $247 billion economic impact nationwide. 57% of business aviation services serve small businesses with 500 or fewer employees. Companies that leverage business aviation outperform their peers in terms of asset efficiency, shareholder value, and overall growth. The analysis spans a variety of company sizes, ownership structures, and global presences but reaches similar conclusions. Unfortunately, the White House's targeting of business aviation plays into lazy stereotypes. michael edgeton
fight against hatred
Manhattan: Hate crimes not only cause physical and psychological harm, they also weaken the social fabric of our society. But a recent opinion piece by attorney Ron Kuby (“Hate Albany’s new hate crime,” Op-Ed, March 26) defended and gave permission to what New York is trying to deter. Among the more surprising claims is that people draw swastikas to identify the Nazis among us. This is wrong, offensive, and destructive. Nazi symbols are intended to show intimidation and hatred towards Jews. Instead of justifying anti-Semitic hate crimes (which increased 60% in New York City in January and February compared to the same period in 2023), we must confront them. The proposal to expand hate crimes coverage is co-sponsored by more than 20 elected officials and has support from faith groups and community-based organizations across New York. Eric S. Goldstein, CEO of UJA New York Federation
thinly veiled
Margate, Fla.: Voice actor Don Schwartz should think twice about MLK's wise and prescient words. He said, “When people criticize Zionists, they are referring to Jews. You are talking about anti-Semitism.” Richard Sherman
compensation for crime
Ozone Park: Eric Trump says Donald Trump's property shouldn't be seized because he built a skyline. So does that mean he shouldn't have been prosecuted since there have been zero car thefts in Howard Beach since John Gotti moved in? Ray Huckinson
exposure
Rockaway Park: The worst decision Donald Trump made in the last eight years was to run for president. Otherwise, you could be indicted for paying hush money to Stormy Daniels, be indicted for not returning top secret documents to the government, be arrested for trying to overturn Georgia's election, etc. He would not have been held responsible for the next incident. The attack on the United States Capitol. It is even possible that responsibility for the sexual assault was denied. Some of the statements he made about women while running for president, coupled with his past relationships with women, may make his denials hard to believe for those outside of his cult. If you take these charges out of the equation, the only problem he has to deal with is his wealth being overvalued for financial gain. anthony johnson
reveal
Manhattan: To voice actor John Gerolmino: Typical Trump defender. “I never voted for him.” But anything bad you say about him you're going to deflect by pointing to Joe Biden. People are leaving the Democratic Party because the DNC refuses to give them a non-elderly candidate. The Republican Party refuses to support anyone who is not a hateful racist with criminal tendencies. they are not the same. Democrats who leave the party do not join the Republican Party. Those who seek to join the Republican Party are racists and bigots. Imagine despising immigrants even though your own family is full of them. We are at a point where Trump apologists like you should come out of the proverbial closet. Wear a red hat, this is your sign. TS Farani
profitable target
North Massapequa, Louisiana: In a Daily News article and editorial (“Can Road,” March 24) about slumlords who continue to evade the law in 2021 and beyond, I offer solutions. Has: Hiring State Attorney General Letitia James and Judge Arthur. Engoron tackles the slumlord problem. It took James almost four years to get Trump. Can you imagine if it took her the same four years to get these slumlords? The Trump case is winding down, so they'll both have time. Imagine the amount of fines and forfeitures collected from these landlords. Stephen Malicek
malignant varieties
Farmington, Maine: On “The Rising Rate of Serious Dog Bites in the United States” (March 24): I have been, and continue to be, the proud owner of a German Shepherd for most of my life. When I came across this article, the first thing that crossed my mind was that The News used stereotypical pictures of dog breeds in their articles. After reading this story, I wondered why photos of small dogs were not used. We all know that a dog is only as good as its handler. Many small dogs bite people or larger dogs first. My area is home to mainly small dogs, and most of them react negatively to my dog when I walk down the street. My dog backs away and waits for them to approach to be friendly. Nine times out of 10, the meetings are friendly. With repeated positive corrections, your dog will learn the correct behavior. John N. Honus
Money maker?
Bronx: “After the worst year, DOT launches e-bike safety campaign” (March 19): It’s great to teach e-bike riders how to stay safe. But the Department of Transportation Secretary requires riders to take a class, just as he used the refresher course gimmick to teach New York City how to use the app, paying all TLC license holders $150. Please don't line your pockets by doing so. Virgilio Carballo
