ROCKFORD, Ill. (CBS) — Four people were killed and five others were injured in an attack in Rockford, Illinois, on Wednesday afternoon. Police said some of the victims had been stabbed.
Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd said the first call was a medical call in the 2300 block of Holmes at about 1:15 p.m. Shortly afterward, additional police and emergency personnel were called to multiple scenes in Rockford and surrounding areas in Winnebago County.
Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana said there was a home invasion near the intersection of Florence and Eggleston. A young woman was stabbed in the face and hand and seriously injured as she tried to flee. A good Samaritan who tried to help her was also stabbed.
Red said a total of four people were killed, one seriously injured, and four others were taken to hospital in stable condition. Redd said not all of the victims were stabbed, but none were victims of gunfire.
Those who died were a 15-year-old girl, a 63-year-old woman, a 49-year-old man, and a 22-year-old man. Caruana said a postal worker was among those killed.
The suspect was taken into custody by about 1:30 p.m., Caruana said. According to police, the suspect is a 22-year-old man.
Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara said he was “completely disturbed by this act of violence.”
Mr Redd said police were questioning a suspect who was taken into custody, but there was no clear motive for the attack.
