BALTIMORE – The search for six construction workers turned into a recovery effort Tuesday night after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore. A cargo ship crashed into a bridge early Tuesday morning.
At the time of the collapse, the six men were working for the Brauner Construction Company, filling a hole in the bridge's center span.
The men, now presumed dead, were from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico and lived in Dundalk and Highlandtown, according to the Baltimore Banner's media partners. The Guatemalan Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that two of the men are from Guatemala, according to a news release Tuesday evening.
According to the Banner, the men are in their 30s and 40s and have spouses and children.
Mr. Banner was told by the company's employees, “They are all hard-working and humble people.''
One of the missing workers in El Salvador was identified as Miguel Luna by the nonprofit organization CASA.
“He is a husband, father of three, and has called Maryland home for over 19 years,” CASA Executive Director Gustavo Torres said in a statement Tuesday night. said he is a “long-time member of the CASA family.”
Honduran Deputy Foreign Minister Antonio Garcia told The Associated Press that Mayor Yasir Suazo Sandoval, a Honduran national, is missing. Garcia has been in contact with Suazo's family, he said.
The Mexican embassy in Washington said one of the six people was Mexican.

Two other workers were rescued from the water. One person was not injured. The other person was hospitalized but later discharged.
“This was completely unexpected,” Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Browner Builders, told The Associated Press. “I don't know what else to say. We take great pride in our safety and have put up cones, signs, lights, fences and markings. But we never expected the bridge to collapse. I didn’t.”
