Part of the reasoning behind Berry's idea was to give the team the most flexibility for the second half of the regular season. It also keeps the season competitive and gives teams more time before they throw in the towel and start selling off their rosters.
Berry also noted that the trade deadline was not adjusted when the NFL changed its regular season to 18 weeks.
“Our proposal [Berry’s original Week 10 trade deadline idea] “It will move to about 55% of the games held,” Berry said. “And, by the way, in the last 10 years, Week 11 was the earliest a team would be eliminated from postseason consideration, and that happened in 2014” and 2016.Looking at the past three years [seasons]In fact, more than 27 teams are within two games of a wild-card spot.
“We felt like that was the best place to have more flexibility and be able to think positively, but it could also be a time to still be competitive as the team is thinking about this season.”
Since 2012, the NFL trade deadline has been scheduled for the Tuesday after Week 8. This season, teams have until Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. ET to complete the deal before the start of the second half of the regular season.
