HBO has postponed the third season of Euphoria.
An HBO spokesperson said, “HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to producing a great third season.” variety. “In the meantime, we will allow our in-demand cast members to pursue other opportunities.”
The script for season 3 is still being written. This news comes after reports that the show's third season has been canceled entirely.
Production on Season 3 of the show had been delayed for a long time due to the Hollywood strike and the July 2023 death of Angus Cloud, who played local drug dealer Fez. The show also sent most of its cast, including Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, Sidney Sweeney and Hunter Schaefer, into Hollywood's upper echelons, making coordinating production schedules difficult.
In November 2023, HBO confirmed that season 3 of the show is scheduled to premiere in 2025. That means there will be at least a three-year gap between seasons since Season 2 starts in January 2022. Due to the long time between seasons, rumors were swirling that Season 3 would take place after a five-year time jump.
In an interview with Jimmy Fallon in January, Elordi joked that season 3 would have to take place in the future or “it would look weird.”
“I hope it happens soon, otherwise they're going to have to make me Benjamin Button or something,” he said. “My back hurts walking down the hall, you know?”
“Euphoria” also stars Maude Apatow, Eric Dane, Alexa Demme, Nika King, Storm Reid, Coleman Domingo and Austin Abrams. The film follows Lou (Zendaya), a teenage drug addict, as she struggles to stay sober after rehab and readjust to high school. While the show has received praise for its acting (Zendaya won two Emmys for her role as Ru), it has also drawn backlash for its sexual content and depictions of drug use.
