Multiple major champion and former world number one Soyeon Ryu has announced her retirement from professional golf.
Ryu, who won the 2011 U.S. Women's Open and the 2017 Anna Inspiration (now Chevron Championship), announced the decision in a social media announcement. “It's one of the most important decisions of my life.”
Ryu said this on Instagram.
“Hello everyone, this is Soyeon Ryu.
Today I wanted to share with you one of the most important decisions of my life. Unfortunately, the Chevron Championship will be my last match on the LPGA Tour.
After deciding to retire, I spent a lot of time reflecting on my career. So many memories came back and so many emotions came up. However, the more I thought about it, the more I became grateful for many things. I am so grateful to be able to do what I love every day and make it my career. I'm not going to lie. There were some tough patches, but I really enjoyed it all despite some challenges. Most of all, I am deeply grateful for the love and support I have received from you throughout my career.
People often say, “Golf is life,” and I think that's exactly true. I learned a lot of things through this game, including patience, respect for others, and perseverance. Golf has taught me a lot. From now on, I want to do something to make this sport even better. So I hope you will continue to support me in this next chapter of my life.
I look forward to giving all my touring friends a big hug soon. Thank you very much for your patronage and support over the years. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. See you in Houston. ;)”
Ryu, who won six LPGA titles during his career, has yet to play in a 2024 event, with his last event being next month's Chevron Championship.
