ST. LOUIS — Harris Stowe State University College of Education continues to be accredited by the Missouri State Board of Education based on the recommendation of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
The College of Education is authorized to recommend candidates for educator certification on an ongoing basis.
HSSU President Dr. Latonia Collins-Smith said, “We have a great tradition of preparing scholars to become excellent teachers in the St. Louis City and County School System.”
“We take this responsibility seriously, knowing that our graduates are essential to addressing the current education crisis and teacher shortage. There is no greater mission than educating the next generation. ”
The HSSU School of Education is a priority for the university, and HBCU members have identified candidates for the position of Dean of the School of Education and expect the position to be filled in the 2024-2025 academic year.
“Maintaining DESE accreditation affirms Harris-Stowe State University's unwavering commitment to providing top-notch academics to students pursuing education degrees,” said President and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer said Dr. Dimitri Horner.
“We look forward to further strengthening the School of Education and promoting the continued success of our institution.”
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education said, “Annual recognition is a noteworthy accomplishment and demonstrates your institution's commitment to ensuring that children across Missouri have access to high-quality teachers, counselors, and school teachers.'' This is a testimony. Congratulations.”
The university's new associate dean, Dr. Derrick Mitchell, joined HSSU in January 2024. He is a graduate of the College of Education and most recently served as network superintendent for St. Louis Public Schools.
The College of Education Advisory Council was established in February. HSSU said the organization is made up of six education leaders currently working in school districts across the Capital Region.
Among other duties, Council members will assist in interviewing new deans and developing future strategic plans for the School of Education.
In February, the College of Education also held its first town hall meeting for alumni and the general public to update them on the College's progress and answer questions.
